Skill Development

What Your Child Will Gain

The abacus is a whole-brain training tool — every level of practice builds these core skills further.

Concentration

The core skill practiced throughout — a child's ability to focus fully on the task at hand.

Visualization

Children learn to picture the abacus in their mind, building strong visual memory along the way.

Listening Skills

Listening-based calculations sharpen focus and train the ear alongside the mind.

Mental Arithmetic

From basic addition to multi-digit multiplication and division — all performed in the mind.

Photographic Memory

Regular practice strengthens visual memory, helping children retain and recall information faster.

Confidence

As speed and accuracy improve, children carry that confidence into schoolwork and beyond.

Did You Know?

A Brief History of the Abacus

The abacus, also called a counting frame, is a calculating tool that has been in use since ancient times — in the Near East, Europe, China and Russia — long before the written numeral system. It consists of rows of movable beads representing digits, manipulated to add, subtract, and even find square or cube roots.

Modern designs, like the Japanese soroban, are still used for real calculations today. While calculators have taken over daily use, the abacus remains one of the most effective tools for teaching children arithmetic — training the brain, not just the fingers.

Bright Colours, Bigger Impact

Instead of dull, opaque beads, the Gowbell Abacus uses bright colours to strengthen visualization and leave a stronger impression on visual memory — making every practice session more effective.
